Objectives
The overall objective is to improve significantly successful implementation of Lahti WtE process by improving performance of the process and reducing operation cost. This is done by focusing R&D efforts on most critical issues and details related to waste management and, especially, WtE process.
The specific objectives are: • develop further hot gas cleaning by optimising the use of additional gas cleaning sorbents (including option to recycle filter dust) and to develop even more advanced gas cleaning especially for mercury and other contaminants which are difficult to remove • develop sustainable utilisation methods for bottom ash of the Lahti type gasifier • develop alternative and improved treatment and utilisation methods for utilisation/disposal of gas cleaning residues of WtE process • assess the markets of advanced WtE technology including advanced waste processing • affect on standardisation, especially on preparation of BAT (Best Available Technology) documents related to waste management, material recovery and waste incineration • develop further gasification-based WtE process in order to enable the use of wider selection of waste fuels, which can be utilised in Lahti WtE plant and/or in similar follow-up plants • assess potential for combining the Lahti-type of advanced waste gasification and gas cleaning process to other high efficiency power production processes such as combined cycle power plants and large gas engine plants
